Bickram Ghosh - Rhythmscape

Rhythmscape, Bickram Ghosh’s hugely successful maiden project as a composer (Rhythmscape, the album sits in the chartbusters 6 years after release!) showcases the fertile imagination of this brilliant artist. Bickram’s compositional skills belie his age and the wonderful variety of mood, tone and expression that comes through speak volumes of his skills in this genre.

The lavish praise that has been showered on the album by critics and top artists (read below) alike stands testimony to the birth of a new kind of fusion music, much deeper and soulful than much of the current work in this field.

  • Rhythmscape, the band which has performed throughout the length and breadth of India made its UK debut in 2003 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.

  • In 2004 Rhythmscape has performed at the Forum at Barcelona where the band shared the stage with Sting, Phil Collins, Norah Jones and Bob Dylan.

  • In 2005 yet another concert at the Rhythmsticks Festival in London the band performed to a sold-out house.

  • Their first Live DVD will be released on HMV Saregama soon.

“Captivating, colourful and charismatic are the words which popped into my head as I sat enthralled by a performance by one of India’s leading artists. Bickram Ghosh and his band of musicians…Rhythmscape attracted a full house…at Great Bardfield, Essex. The performance was sensational, inspiring and energetic ….which is why Bickram and his band are such a success at top venues such as the Royal Albert Hall…..”

-Hollie Darken, Essex Observer, UK, 2004

Personalities on Bickram and  Rhythmscape

We Indians, who were present on the occasion felt extremely proud of the wonderful performance that you and your team gave on 25 September, 2007 for the delegates to the 53rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. The entire audience including the foreign delegates felt mesmerised. The standing ovation that was given was entirely spontaneous and you richly deserved it.

I am personally taking credit that it was my decision to arrange for your programme, so that the foreign delegates could see the highest form of our art and culture. Please accept my highest appreciation. I am sure for years to come you will continue to give such happiness and provide the highest form of cultural performance to countless number of people.

With my very best wishes

Your admiringly
Somnath Chatterjee
(Speaker, Lok Sabha)

"I do feel that Bickram’s Rhythmscape has got a fresh new voice of exuberance…it is indeed very exciting."

-Ravi Shankar, sitar maestro

"I have heard many experimental albums, but Bickram Ghosh  has definitely given a different dimension to the concept of fusion. I really enjoyed listening to this album"

-Amjad Ali Khan, sarod maestro

Rhythmscape has that unique quality of being at once wildly exciting and also deeply moving. Bickram's uncanny tabla skills and love for intricate rhythmic patterns inject a fire and pulse which are impossible to resist. Delicious flashes of Latin or Middle-Eastern flavours blend seamlessly into his concoction, a fusion which stands above many of today's stale attempts at musical integration which are happening in India. Yet through all the frantic travels among rhythms and cultures runs a wistful, haunting pull that is inherently, timelessly Indian. With mellifluous vocals and achingly beautiful instrumental interludes, Rhythmscape transports me to an India which is often hard to find.

-Anoushka Shankar, sitar player

Bickram Ghosh’s Rhythmscape has "captured the imagination of musicians and listeners alike."

-Shubha Mudgal, singer

"Bickram’s Rhythmscape is simply brilliant. I love performing with him and his group."
